Secret Chick 2015

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! One of my favorite posts is our annual Scootadoot Chick Secret Santa post. We just love each other, a lot, and we love you guys a lot, and we loving sharing with you how much we love each other, and you.

I promise, I have not been dipping into the spiked eggnog. Yet. I’m just pretty grateful for the wonderful people in my life, these ladies and all of you included.

So, without further ado…

Kyle

After waiting with bated breath to see whose name I would draw for our little exchange, I was super excited to get Jess! (I would have been excited to get any one of these ladies, let’s be honest, I love them all!) Though Jess and I have never met (womp), it seems pretty clear that we’d get along smashingly. I mean, she loves Beyonce. That’s kind of the basis for all solid relationships, amirite? Anyways. When I drew Jess’ name, I hemmed and hawed for a while deciding what to give her – she’s a stylish chick, so I knew I wanted to find something to complement that. She’s also active – if she’s not running, she’s taking care of her totes adorbs little one. Whatever I got needed to fit that kind of lifestyle. I ended up finding a pretty and functional headband. It’s great for the working out (sweat-wicking!) and fun for the fashion-forward (multi-style!). One could wear it while running. Or while enjoying a lazy weekend. Or, my favorite, while going hard in the “athleisure” paint. Functional fashion at its finest!

Mer

It’s our third year of Scoot a Doot Secret Santa and I have yet to get the same person twice! Is that a record? I’m not sure! But I do have to say that I was pretty stoked to be paired with the lovely, talented, and gosh-darn awesome CAMILLE!

Cam is my ride-or-die chick and I always know that when we are together we are basically going to have fun, no matter when we stumble across. This year she came to visit in the spring and we (Jenn, Cam, and myself) took to the streets of Philly for a walking tour. I had SO. MUCH. FUN. with them. I still giggle when I think about how excited Cam was when she spotted someone walking around with Yuengling (because it’s hard to find in CA! Who knew?).

When I found the trivet that covered a few of the places we visited, I knew it would be a great gift for Cam and make her smile. There are so many places on there that we haven’t visited yet, so she’s just going to have to come back!

Vic

I was matched with Kyle this year. I love everything about this chickadee and wanted to get her something that proved useful (but pretty) for a multisport athlete – – runner, footgolfer, basketball diva. So I got her an Oiselle tank. I knew she loved their clothes since she borrowed some of mine on a few occasions and has some great pieces of her own. Happy holidays!

Jenn

At a recent trip to the SkirtSports headquarters, I spotted this shirt and thought of Meri. I can hear her voice saying it as if she coined the phrase herself. And hey, we can all relate, right? I think we can all agree there should always be adult beverages at the finish line. Never mind if it’s 8:30 in the morning.

Jess

I gifted Bec with tea that has literary quotes on each bag. It blends two of her favorite things – tea and words (the second of which we bonded over to begin with). I hope it keeps you cozy and well-read, my dear!

My secret Santa this year was the lovely Vic. I knew immediately I wanted to get her something kitty related. I also know that Vic shares my love of baking. So I went out searching for cat baking supplies. Yes, that phrase is now in my Google history. I found lots of fun stuff and it was really hard to decide, but I knew the apron was the winner as soon as I saw it.  I can’t wait to see what treats Vic cooks up in this apron! Merry Christmas, my love!

Just like Mer, I’ve yet to get the same chick twice, and I was thrilled when my match this year was Jenn. I love this girl like crazy, and just want her to come back to my kitchen and hang out. Jenn’s loves include classic cinema (we’ve co-swooned over Montgomery Clift), Star Wars AND Trek, yoga and her pugs. I figured if I could incorporate at least two, I’d be happy. So when I spotted this pug yoga shirt, I knew this would be the perfect gift for Jenn. Wear it in good health, love, and try not to let the pups knock you over!

Four Gifts from Three Chicks

Have you all heard about the ‘4 present rule’? I’ve seen this around the internet a couple times over the last few years, and I’m very intrigued!

Basically, the idea is that each person gets 4 gifts, one each from the following categories:

Something you want

Something you need

Something to wear/Something warm

Something to read

Does anyone do this? Is it as amazing as it sounds? Tell me everything!

While chatting with the chicks about this, we decided to make lists of our own for you. Not for things that we would want to get, but things we would want to give, in those categories. So, here you have it, our wish list of giving!

Bec

Something You Want (to give): Two words. Camp. Throwback. Have you ever, as an adult, been jealous of the kids as they head of to sleepaway camp? ME TOO! Camp Throwback is the answer. While I have yet to make this a reality, I will someday, and if I could give you a gift to help you refind your silly, fun, a little wild side, this would so be it.

Something You Need (to give): I thought of a few charities that are close to my heart, but what I really NEED to give isn’t exactly a charity. It’s more a message. There’s been a lot of talk this year about body positivity, and not all of it is, well, positive. And frankly, that’s just bullshit (I’m looking at you, Nicole Arbour).

Here’s the deal. Every one of you is beautiful…worthy…powerful. No ifs, ands or buts/butts about it. Love yourself, without condition. Just the way you are, right this very second. You deserve that. You are beautiful.

Now go spread that around. Other people need it, too.

Something Warm: Isn’t it funny how mittens have become such an old school thing? I LOVE MITTENS. I mean, gloves are great and all, and probably more functional in day to day living, but still, mittens are amazing. And these mittens from L.L. Bean? So warm and snuggly. It’s like a hand hug. Which sounds creepier than I imagined.

MITTENS
Something to Read: Brittany Gibbons is the WOMAN (the camp I just talked about? She started it). I’ve followed her blog for years, so when I say she had a book coming out, I couldn’t wait. Fat Girl Walking was better than I could have hoped for. Not only was it laugh out loud funny, but it touched me in a million ways, and let me know, once and for all, that yeah, there are other moms, and other women, that think the things I think. Plus, right now? $1.99 on Kindle. SCORE.

Cam

Something You Want (to give): San Diego Zoo Safari Park Roar and Snore.  Basically, you get to spend the night at the zoo.  I want us all to go to the adult night.  I went for my birthday in September and it was amazing!

Something You Need (to give): I’ve lived here in the Inland Empire my whole life and I attend grad school at Cal State San Bernardino.  The shootings in San Bernardino have been especially jarring, because they literally happened right around the corner.  By a man who grew up in my city.  Everyone I know is linked to someone who was lost or injured on that day.  I have a desperate need to give to the families of those lost.

Something Warm: Alpaca socks! These are adorable.

Womens_Lace_Ankle_Socks__34541.1444504321.1280.1280

Something to Read:Women who Run with the Wolves.” I first heard about this book when I went to the Wild Women Sisterhood gathering in North Carolina.  It’s a game changer, my friends.

wolves

Mer

Something You Want (to give): two words: Momentum Jewelry. Not just because I’m an ambassador, although that certainly doesn’t hurt. I seriously love this jewelry. Positive messages, good vibes, and sure to make others smile.

IMG_1120

Something You Need (to give): We are big fans of giving to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and do so as a family through the year.

During the holidays there is a giving tree at our gym so we love to help make other children’s holidays merry and bright.

Something Warm: On the same note as the giving tree above, my son’s school has a mitten tree. The idea is to donate mittens, scarves, and hats for children. We picked some cute ones from Old Navy.

Something to Read: I haven’t actually had much time to read books geared toward adults lately, however, I’ve been enjoying reading 20 minutes a night with my younger son. A few favorite authors are Mo Willems and Tedd Arnold.

What’s on your wish list this year? What would give in these categories? Do you think this idea is nuts, or totally brilliant?

Show ‘Em Your Rack, A Tutorial

A while back, I posted about my plan to make a medal rack and share it with you, and this weekend, the planets finally aligned to allow me the time to get my craft on. Of course, there are a few things that always make DIY projects better.

Things like a snowy morning.

snow

And Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Colin Firth IS Mr. Darcy.

So, now that we’re all in agreement on that, let’s proceed, shall we? Here’s what you’ll need for this project:

supplies

Supplies:

Wood plaque of your choice                                            Chalkboard Paint                                                        Magnetic Clips

Primer                                                                                       2 Coat Hooks                                                                 Aluminum or Tin Strip

Paint Tinted color of your Choice                                Picture Frame Hook and Nails

Tools:________________________________________________________________________

Hammer                                                                                  Ruler                                                                              Level

Pencil                                                                                       Marker                                                                           Sandpaper or Sanding Block

Drill  or Screwdrivers                                                       Painter’s Tape                                                             Bristle Paintbrush

Foam Tip Paint Brush                                                      Fine Tipped Paint Brush for Touching Up

______________________________________________________________________________________

Step 1: Using a fine grit sandpaper or sanding block, lightly sand any rough areas on your wood piece. Pay attention to edges and corner in particular.

Step 2: Using a piece of paper, make a template for your chalkboard area to help you decide where you want it on your plaque. Once you have decided on placement, mark the corners with a pencil.

Step 2

Step 3: Using a ruler and pencil, outline the desired area. Make sure your lines are straight and centered. Tape off the inside of your area with painters tape. Later you will paint the inside of your rectangle with chalkboard paint.

step3

Step 4: Paint your plaque with primer. Be careful not to get any in the taped off area. Let dry.

step4

Step 5: Paint over the primer with your tinted paint. Let dry.

step5

Step 6: Paint a second coat of your colored paint. Once it’s dry, remove the painter’s tape.

step6

Step 7: Tape off the painted area around your chalkboard area. Paint the bare wood with two coats of primer. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly, and sand lightly between coats. This will help ensure a smoother writing surface once the chalkboard paint is applied.

step7b

Step 8: Apply two coats or chalkboard paint, allowing each coat to dry completely between coats.

chalk1

Step 9: After the chalkboard paint is dry, remove the tape. Touch up any areas with a small tipped paint brush if needed.

chalktouchup3

Step 10: Affix the tin strip (or pieces, as the case may be). Decide where you want your bibs to hang, and using a pencil, outline the strip. Nail in place. I had some tin tiles laying around my house, and used tin snips to cut them to the desired shape and size.

tin Collage

Step 11: Affix the picture frame hanger on the back. First, find the center of your plaque and mark it with a pencil. Then, find the center of the hanger and mark it with a marker. Next, align the two marks and nail your hanger to your plaque.

Step 12: Affix your medal hooks. Decide where you want them to go, and mark the screw holes with a pencil. It’s easier to start the holes using a drill and a bit. Using the hardware that came with your hooks, attach them to your plaque.

Step 13: Celebrate because YOU ARE DONE. And you rock! All that is left to do is hang your new medal rack. Then, attach your bibs to the clips and hang your bling from the hooks. Look how awesome you are!

I had my magnetic clips a little crooked in this shot, but you get the idea.

I am loving how this project turned out. Now, I just need more medals to hang from it!

How do you display your medals? Have you made your own rack, or anything else, for that matter? Tell me all about it in the comments!

BRB – I’m streaking!

runstreak

runstreak7

Two winters ago I was dealing with a lot of snow and a bit of ennui. Brooke in Florida suggested we participate in a streak and since I’m game for anything Brooke suggests, I completed my first run streak ever.

Last holiday season was a tough one and I didn’t feel like doing much of anything at all. We all have times like that, right?

But guess who’s back? Back again. (Please sing Eminem with me.) When a friend mentioned the Runner’s World Run Streak in a Facebook post last month I said to myself, “Self, this is something that would keep you accountable and moving throughout the holidays! You should do this.”

runstreak1

Day 1, I hit the streets with Gemma June. Why yes, my dog has a middle name.

My healthy ways have been somewhat lacking for the past month while we remodeled our bathroom. I’m happy to report that I’m back in my gym routine and running daily, thanks to the run streak! Plus, thanks to global warming (that’s weird to say), it’s actually been pretty gorgeous here in New Jersey and I’ve been able to get outside for many of my miles.

Ran through the field at my son's school while he rode nearby and cheered for me.

Ran through the field at my son’s school while he rode nearby and cheered for me.

That’s not to say that everything is AMAZING and I love every moment. There are definitely days that I don’t want to get out there. Timing has been tough, thanks to scheduling conflicts and I’m sort of one that thrives on routines so throwing a run in midday or at night after eating dinner (blech) isn’t always easy. My favorite time to run is in the morning. But you know what? I’ve gotten it done – at least a mile a day for the past 15 days.

runstreak3

Some days I push hard. Other days I just take it “easy” and when I say easy, I mean as easy as running can be. For me, it’s never easy. And that’s okay. I’ve been happy with my miles thus far and haven’t regretted a single one.

Momentum Jewelry keeps me motivated. And trust me when I say, when I'm glancing at my watch, I'm internalizing those words.

Momentum Jewelry keeps me motivated. And trust me when I say, when I’m glancing at my watch, I’m internalizing those words. I repeat them as a cadence.

When I’m out there with my dog, she’s always pushing my pace and we’re trying not to trip over each other. Okay, okay, I’m trying not to trip over her.

runstreak5

Come on, mom! Let’s go!

If the outside option isn’t available, I’m lucky to have my trusty treadmill. I like having all my senses available when I’m running with my dog so I haven’t been listening to music when running outside. When I get on the treadmill? I rock out!

runstreak6

Dancing, singing, hands in the air like I just don’t care.

15 days down out of 37 – so far, so good! I’m loving this run streak and I’m happy that I’m loving it. So much of this month is dedicated to others, which is always something that pleases my philanthropic heart, but I also love having something that it mine.

My foot doesn’t hurt, my legs feel strong, and hey, it’s supposed to be a high of 63 degrees today so excuse me while I get out there!

runstreak8

Have you ever done a run streak? Are you participating in the #RWRUNSTREAK? How’s it been going for you?

Opting Out

This year, REI stores will be closed on Black Friday, as they’ve decided to #optoutside. We LOVE this. Not because we have any issue with Black Friday shopping, but companies encouraging folks to get outside and get active is awesome. And a couple of us here decided to join them. So, here are our outdoor plans for the day.

Bec

I was an avid participant in Black Friday for years. The local outlet mall opened at midnight (Massachusetts has pretty strict blue laws about who can be open on Thanksgiving, and when). So, we’d head out around 9:00 PM, coffee in hand, sit in traffic, stand in some lines, freeze our butts off, then head to stores that opened later. I’d usually roll into my house around 6:00 AM, and have breakfast.

Breakfast, anyone?

This was breakfast. It’s pie.

And then I would laze on the couch all day, because I was exhausted. Obviously.

Don’t get me wrong, I had a blast. There was always tons of laughter, some hysterical, but it was what really kicked off the holidays for me. But, the last few years, I just havent’ wanted to do it. My kids are older, and the things they ask for aren’t usually the things you get great deals on. Plus, my husband does a lot of the holiday shopping in advance.

Last year, I didn’t go out at night, but got up early and hit Target. This year, I’m opting out entirely, and making this my view for at least part of my day, when I head out for a nice walk.

Red Friday?

Red Friday?

If you’re out shopping, I hope you get great deals! If you need me, I’ll be walking off some pie.

Mer

While I have never been one for consumerism in general, I do love a good sale. However, I won’t be shopping today. Oh no. But in all honestly, I probably won’t be spending much time in the great outdoors either.

Which pains me to say. I’d much rather be outside than doing what we are doing…

Bathroom remodeling projects.

Yay?

It has consumed my life (and my house, including my dining room table, living room, basement – ON MY TREADMILL! – and all other flat surfaces) since the beginning of November. Our downstairs full bathroom is nearly complete but since all my dad-in-law’s tools are here, we have decided to tackle the upstairs half bath as well. We even installed a new toilet that we got from toiletable.com.

However I did recently commit to the Real World Run Streak (#RWRUNSTREAK) so I’ll definitely be outside for at least one mile. And my hope is to cajole my boys into raking leaves with me for more outside fun. Fingers crossed!

Leaves, leaves, leaves!

Leaves, leaves, leaves!

However you spend your day, we hope it’s a joyous one! We’re super thankful for all of you. And leftovers.

How are you spending Black Friday? Are you out shopping? Tell us about your deals! And if not, tell us about your day!

Gonna Fly Now – 2015 Philadelphia Half Marathon

phillyhalf3

The Philly Marathon holds a special place in my heart. This race is THE ONE. The one that inspired me to run.

In 2010, I cheered Victoria during her first full marathon and that was where I was officially bit by the running bug.

In 2011, I ran my first road race, the Rothman 8k, which is part of the weekend’s events with Brooke (and cheered Victoria the next day during the half).

2012 was a year of volunteering – I gave out heat wraps and medals – giving back to the running community that has provided me with so much.

2013 was a year of cheering Kyle at HER first marathon. Are you sensing a theme here?

And finally, in 2014, I ran the half, while Victoria ran the full.

This year I once again registered nice and early for the half. As the date drew closer I asked my dear friend, Chrissy, if she had any interest in joining me. Chrissy is newer to the running game and we had a lot of fun at the Broad Street 10 Miler in May. She and I have been friends since 3 grade and I always have a blast with her. After talking her into it (not difficult, for the record) we were ready to embrace the race!

The most important thing, besides the running, was what we were going to wear. Since we are from the Northeast and since we love coffee, hot chocolate, donuts, bagels, and everything else Dunkin’ Donuts has to offer… we settled on this!

phillyhalf1

Flat us, practicing holding hands.

We woke up bright and early on race day and made our way to… Dunkin’ Donuts. Because, you know, priorities.

phillyhalf5

Got the train to Philly and walked the mile or so to the start area. The goal was to meet up with Bonnie pre-race to give high fives, hugs, and pep talks.

But that’s not exactly how it played out.

There were security lines that seemed to go on for blocks, serpentine-ing around streets and buildings.

phillyhalf6

Since the Boston Marathon tragedy occurred, they’ve added security check points at the Philly Marathon. I sincerely appreciate and completely understand the efforts.

However, this was like nothing I’d seen before. I know recent events had an effect on this but there was a lack of communication, volunteers, and general knowledge for the runners waiting in line. Additionally a lot of people who were cheering were in this line and I think that made the quantity of people more than the checkers could handle swiftly.

phillyline

We waited on the line for an hour, without seeing much movement. Once the clock struck 7am (the time the race was supposed to start), all of a sudden we moved at a fast pace, streaming through the gates. The first racers were off at 7:13.

That said, that was the only snafu that we encountered that day. Everything can’t be perfect, right? We still made it into the blue corral with plenty of time to spare. Sometimes being in the last corral has its benefits!

phillyhalf2

We danced our way up to the start line, jamming to songs like the Percolator and Murder She Wrote over the sound system. Kicking it old school!

Soon we crossed the start line and took off to the sounds of the Rocky theme. Obviously! We heard that often throughout the 13.1 miles and I pumped my arms over my head each time.

I think one of the (many) reasons I adore running in Philly because I know where we are at all times. It’s my own personal tour of Philly, via foot! We passed the church my friends recently got married in and then a bit later on, the Moshulu, where their reception was held. In October, Jay and I drove from point A to point B. Not so much on Sunday!

Chrissy and I were doing 1:1 intervals and keeping our eyes peeled for fun things. Like all the Dunkin’ Donuts along the course. I’m pretty sure we saw at least 6!

phillyhalf7

Instagram friend and fellow blue buddy Rachel found us and we got to see her several times throughout the race, which was awesome.

Running a course you know is also sort of a mixed blessing because you know what to expect… and where the huge hill is. We hit several smaller hills and Chrissy would ask me each time, “Is THIS it?” And my answer every time was, “No. But you’ll know when it is.”

Now?

Now?

And she did. Because it felt like it was never ever going to end. Once we finally got passed it, we resumed our 1:1 intervals throughout Fairmount Park.

I listened to an awesome pep talk that someone else was getting from their personal cheer squad. I decided that I too, needed a pep talk, which I voiced. An awesome man on the course did just that. You can always rely on fellow runners to pick you up!

After the rough uphill a bit early, there was a glorious, glorious downhill. Hurrah! At the bottom of the downhill was a cheer group that I was very much looking forward to.

Turn up your speakers and get ready to boogie!

Are they not freaking awesome?

From there, we knew we only had a few miles left. Our goal was to finish under 3 hours and we knew if we stay consistent with our intervals, we would achieve it!

I focused on my breathing and listening for the beep of Chrissy’s watch. We didn’t talk much the last couple of miles, we just wanted to get to this point.

phillyhalf8

Jokers to the left, clowns to the right?

Once we got passed that sign and saw the front of the Art Museum, it was go time. We started to pick up speed and crossed the finish line, hand in hand!

And then we got medaled. Which was when all the emotions hit.

phillyhalf9 phillyhalf10

And there might have been a few happy tears shed between the two of us.

philly11 philly12

We did it! Furthermore, we did it together and felt really accomplished about the entire experience.

Chrissy has told me a few times that I’m one of the reasons that she started running and I can’t even begin to tell you how special that makes me feel. I know what running does for me and to have her be able to experience that and feel so positive, it’s truly a blessing to be part of her journey.

phillyhalf11

This medal is the BEST. It rings!

We found Rachel again while waiting for the finish line snacks and goodies and it was great to be able to catch up with her and learn of her 32 minute PR. Freaking awesome! As was the warm chicken broth and rice that they give at the end of the line of goodies. I told the volunteers how excited I was for it and they seemed surprised. No way, man! The salt and the warmth is perfection.

phillyhalf12

Momentum Jewelry helped me keep my CAN DO attitude!

On the train Chrissy and I took our banana phone picture, as is standard practice here!

phillyhalf13

We also rang our medals incessantly. I’m sure the other passengers loved us. No shame!

Once the Philadelphia Marathon weekend is complete, I feel like it’s the official start of Thanksgiving and holiday time. So, come at me, sides! My body is ready!

The Scoot a Doot Chicks hope you all have a very happy, healthy, and safe Thanksgiving! We’ll see you back around these parts on Friday.

So long, 2015, You Were Pretty Awesome!

With the year drawing to a close and Thanksgiving later this week, I found myself reflecting on 2015. Since joining Scootadoot last November, I’ve gotten to do a lot of great things and meet some really wonderful people. I’d like to take a sec to just say I’ve had a great time being a Chick, and thought I’d share some of my favorite memories from my first year with Scoot.

Philly Stray Boots Tour – This self-guided walking tour was the kick-off to a great first half marathon weekend! Meri, Cam, and I saw the sites of historical downtown Philadelphia while looking for clues scavenger hunt style. The fact that it was self-guided meant that we weren’t part of a group crowded around a guide in period costume tell us stuff we earned in elementary school. Plus, we’re occasionally inappropriate, which likely would not have been appreciated by fellow tour goers with small children.

tour5

An up the nose (and crotch) shot with a statue on the tour. See, inappropriate.

An up the nose (and crotch) shot with a statue on the tour. See, inappropriate.

And the actual sites were pretty cool, like the first ever US Post Office! It’s still a working post office! (It had a creepy vibe, too, it you’re into that kind of thing.)

tour2

A few days later, I ran my first half with my fellow Chicks Mer, Cam, and Vic at the AC April Fool’s Half. There were so many things to love about this race! I hadn’t seen my girls for three years and a visit was long overdue! Plus, we had costumes, and they were cute, so there was that. I ran my half in 2:55 and was pretty darn pleased with myself!

I met some great folks, including Bonnie, a.k.a ‘Cuse Runner Girl!

Bye, Bonnie! Until next time!

Bye, Bonnie! Until next time!

Meri and I played cat and mouse with these lovely people the whole race, then shared a beer afterward.

New Friends!

New Friends!

The best part was the end! Seriously, when I saw that finish line I was SO HAPPY. I grabbed Meri’s hand as we crossed because there wasn’t anyone else I would have rather finished my first half with.

Aaaaaand we're done! (Photo Credit, Ken Shelton Photography)

The other best part was the winning of the costume contest because we won stuff! After all the hard work Cam and I put into making our costumes and Vic and Meri put into looking cute in them, we celebrated with our favorite food group.

Mmmmmm, chocolate.

Mmmmmm, chocolate.

Then there was that time the Meridith came to visit me and we ran the BolderBOULDER! Before the race, we got to see Abdi and Meb and Pete at a press conference. It was certainly a highlight of the weekend.

At what other race in this country do you see seriously talented belly dancers supporting and entertaining the runners? You will only see this in Boulder, folks.

This might be my second favorite photo. Ever.

Run, Betty, run!!!

Run, Betty, run!!!

As the end of the summer came I focused on my second 1/2, the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon. This was by far my biggest race of the year as far as fitness and athleticism were concerned. It was also the prettiest course I ran in 2015. I have nothing but positive things to say about this race, and it will probably be an annual entry for me from now on.

This was the hardest race I’ve run to date. The elevation in Estes Park is 7,522 and the course gains just under 500 feet over its thirteen miles. That’s why I’m so proud of this gorgeous medal, it represents all the things I was told I couldn’t do as a person with asthma.

Throughout the year, I pulled out my 2015 achievement board to check my progress. My goals were many and ambitious. Most of them did not happen. Some, however did, and the ones that I succeeded at were some of the most important I’ve ever set for myself. I can’t wait to make my achievement board for 2016.

Most of all, I’m grateful to the other Chicks and all of you for welcoming me into your community. You all amaze me, and inspire me to keep setting the bar high. Thanks for a fantastic 2015, Scootadoot!

What achievements are you most proud of this year? What are you setting your cap after in 2016? Tell me all about it in the comments!

Race Recap: 2015 Solemates CollaBEERation 5k & Brewfest

Only in Colorado would we combine two of our favorite things, craft beer and running, in one location. Shoes & Brews, half running store half craft brewery, is doing just that. It’s the only place in the nation where you can shop for top-of-the-line running gear AND enjoy a pint of tasty craft beer. It also happens to be a mere 25 minute drive from my house.

When I found out about the Solemates CollaBEERation 5k & Brewfest hosted by Shoes & Brews and Left Hand Brewing, my husband said he’d run it with me. This made me super excited because my husband doesn’t run; a lifetime of playing hockey makes for uncooperative knees. Instead, he supports me by being my race photographer (because he’s the bestest). So I signed us up, and then we learned were there was unlimited beer samples at the finish!

I picked up our packets and was thrilled with what was inside, and with the lack of what was inside. Included were a sweet, light-weight race hat from Headsweats, a granola packet from Barbara’s Better Granola, a Honey Stinger Energy Gel, and a coupon for a RoadID bracelet. What was missing was excessive flyers and advertisements and other things that normally end up in the garbage or recycle bin. One of my very favorite things about this race is that it was at 10 am not at 6 am. I appreciated the extra blanket snuggling time, specially since it was cold that morning!

I love small races where the mood is fun and festive and this race is both of those things! The crowd was smiling and eager to get the race started.

The course ran along the St. Vrain Greenway in Longmont, CO, and we enjoyed great views of the Front Range and Longs Peak.

We ran intervals because my lungs were not happy and my husband was sore from skating. Our pace was 12:31, which is about average for me and I loved being out there him. We held hands when we walked and cheered each other on as we ran. It was one of my most fun races!

We crossed the finish and smiling volunteers cheered for us, all the volunteers were great! The expo was rocking with live music, and we hurried to get our free beer sample because we were THIRSTY!

The free samples ended up being free PINTS, so that was awesome!

IMG_1571 We enjoyed our beer and the band, but decided not to have a second cup. We were hungry and went and ate eggs benedict instead. We opted not to take the shuttle limo, hilarious as it was, and chose to walk the 700 meters back to the parking lot.

This was such a fun race that I think it will be my new favorite local 5k!It had a great vibe and chill atmosphere. It’s a young race so they are working out kinks, (some porta potties at the aid station would be great), but they do a great job and the volunteers were fantastic. I’ll definitely be there next year!

Did you run a race this weekend? Were you at Wine & Dine? Tell us all about it in the comments!

In a year’s time

I’ve never been one to think very far into the future. Retirement planning was such a tough concept for me. It’s forever away, why do I need to start planning now? And if you’ve been reading for a while, you know I am also the Crown Princess of Procrastination Nation.

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine posted on Facebook and said that volunteers were needed for this year’s South Shore Half Marathon, and people that volunteered would get free registration next year. I’m not sure why I even cared. I mean, I had friends that ran it last year, and it’s super close to my house, and runs through a gorgeous part of the burbs that I live in, but still. Aside from being a habitual non long term plan ahead-er, I haven’t run in… a while.

Like two years, give or take.

Still, I immediately texted my running/walking/brunching partner, Sara, and told her about my cockamamie plan, signed us up, and wondered how cold it was going to be on race day. (It wound up being high 50s/low 60s. Last year, it was in the 20s, so this was definitely better).

We signed up to work at the finish line. I had no idea what we’d be doing, but at least we didn’t have to be there until 8. I probably would have gone for race day registration, because sitting there doing paperwork is my speed, but it was a) bananas early and b) already full. So finish line it was!

It took us a few minutes to even find the finish line, because it’s tucked away on a side road, behind a cemetery, at the bottom of a hill, almost in the woods. Having not volunteered before, we were a little lost, but Sara and I are take charge, bossy types, so before long, we found our spot and got down to business.

We wound up unpacking, unrolling, and eventually, handing out medals. There were a LOT of them. Something like 2200. I had no idea that many people were running this thing.

Lots and lots of medals. They're so pretty!

Unpacking isn’t exactly glamorous work, but man, handing out medals to people that just finished a half marathon? That is FUN.

We were actually around the corner from the actual finish line, but we could see it through the trees. There was music playing (omg, please stop with the cheerleader song, I cannot), and a generally festive atmosphere. We stood around for a bit, waiting for the first person to cross the finish line (1:15:13, woah) and then more people started to trickle in.

And then BOOM, it just sort of exploded for about an hour. With 7 people handing out medals, we could still barely keep up. But it was a good kind of crazy, you know?

Some people looked like they were just out for a leisurely stroll, some looked like they wanted to die. One guy proposed to his girlfriend as she finished (she said yes! check out the race’s FB page for pics. )  But they were all pretty happy to see us! (We were directly in front of the bananas, which may have been part of it).

I said ‘Congratulations’ and ‘Great job’ so many times. A lot of people thanked us for volunteering, which was cool. Things would slow down and speed up, but it did trickle down eventually, and then we heard someone say there were only a few more people left out there.

Leaving before everyone finished was in NO WAY an option. If you finish a half marathon, even you’re the last one to finish… Hell, ESPECIALLY if you are the last one to finish, someone better be there to hand you a metal.

And we were.

All in all, it was a great experience. I feel so motivated, and inspired, by all the people that ran that race. And, that day reminded me of a few things that I needed to be reminded of.

  1. I saw so many people with this look on their face, this immense pride at having finished, this visible sense of accomplishment. I want that moment. And the medal that goes with it, tbh.
  2. Not everyone who runs half marathons looks the way you might expect people who run half marathons to look. I.e. I won’t be the only fat girl at the party.
  3. I can do this. I am capable of whatever I put my mind to, I just have to put my mind to it. I can. And I will. (borrowed from Mer)
It will be mine

It will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.

So, in a year’s time, I plan to be on the other side of that finish line. Sara and I are working out the details of our training plan. I can tell you it won’t be like my last half marathon training plan (pretend you haven’t signed up for 8 months, then try to train in 8 weeks and gift yourself with a year of intense PF pain).

And hey, if you’re from this area, and want to join me, do it! Heck, even if you aren’t from anywhere near here (HINT HINT HINT TO MY CHICKS), you should come up anyway. You don’t even have to run. Just volunteer.

You can hand me my medal.
