Finding your motivation – what drives you?

New Year, New You! How many times have we heard that? And how many times do we set out on a new year journey with the best of intentions, only to find that they fall to the wayside, some sooner than other. Because, not for nothing, but LIFE. Life can be overwhelming, exhausting, and throw you a few curve balls when you least expect them.

This post is for everyone. For those who need a little boost as we jump into 2016. Those who need a little ‘atta boy (or ‘atta girl). And those who are looking for motivation in all the right places. That would be right here, just so you know.

A year after the birth of my first son, (who will be 11 years old in February – Oh Em Gee) I found my local tribe and began a healthier lifestyle with a fitness course called Stroller Strides. Before that, I was basically a mess. I wish I were kidding but no, I’m not.

Anyway, it was there that I met many dear friends, including Brandi, Jen, and Megan. What kept ME going in those days was knowing that I had a standing date with them, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

These women are very strong motivators in my life. They saw me through the very early stages of my running career, meeting me at local parks and telling me that I wasn’t going to die when I swore up and down that I would. (Running brings out the drama in me.)

Jen, Brandi, and Megan have been with me through it all and they continue to be there for me, supporting and lifting me up through every trial and tribulation. Furthermore, they are very strong in knowing their WHY. When you surround yourself with motivated people, you can’t help but set goals and achieve dreams yourself!

Rather than me blather on and on (after all, you get me all the time) I figured I would ask them if they would share what keeps them motivated. Naturally, they were all about it.

I believe staying motivated is a mindset. If your head is not fully in your decision to change, you will never change. As a personal trainer my career is to motivate people on a daily basis, but sometimes it’s hard to motivate myself to keep going.

One trick I have is to take a quiet moment to myself (even if that means escaping into the bathroom or in my car just to get a couple of minutes alone), take a breath, and ask myself what I am trying to achieve in that moment and how I can do it.

I am also a list maker, so if I can find a quote that moves me, I will write it at the top of my list as a reminder, then start to list all the steps I need to work on completing my goal. It’s all about keeping my Negative Nelly voice quiet and not let her be loud enough for me to hear.  When I keep her quiet I know I can do anything I set my mind to.

Did you ever hear of that quote that says “I don’t have the time, I make the time” in regards to working out? Maybe it’s because I went to Catholic school; maybe it’s because I’m a teacher but I have been told that I would do really well in the military.

My running schedule is a fine oiled machine that screams at me from most-high on the fridge, like a Jillian Michaels trainer. That’s just the way I like it. The calendar is my motivation. I use good old fashion pen and paper. I need to see the big picture, like a month, to see progress or slowing down. It holds me accountable. I see gaps, highs, and lows. I see variety. Everyday is something different, if I want it to be. I have control, I write it down, and cross it off with pride when I have finished.

It all started like this. I came face to face with very common issues most young mothers have.

“How do I work out with young children/babies?”

“How do I muster the energy after the baby has been crying all night?”

“How do I make time for myself without feeling guilty?”

I only have so many hours to get what I want completed before 3 o’clock hits and then BAM! Homework, snack, dinner, karate, etc!

I was already in the frame of mind that I don’t need to pay an arm and a leg for a gym. I can run at home on the treadmill in the basement or with the jogger. YouTube videos like XHIT Daily work for strength training days.

My magic numbers started out as 2 days cardio, 2 days lifting. But after training for and completing Philly Half Marathon and then sliding right into the Runner’s World Holiday Run Streak (#rwrunstreak), the schedules are showing me that my body can go harder and farther than expected.

Just as I scheduled my workouts, the day also has baby time, rest time, and clean time. It just works for me. Some days, something gets skipped. With hyper-scheduling comes fluidity. But as the calendar shows me, there is always tomorrow to conquer.

What keeps me motivated?  I think that I have found that as I get older, what keeps me motivated in most everything in life (exercise, parenting, studying, going to the grocery store, you name it) is pretty much the same things.

Motivation boils down to whatever is going to make me feel happy or is going to make my inner light shine.  If the end result is a sense of overall awesomeness, then I can pretty much push myself to do it, whatever that particular “it” may be.  I link myself with positive and inspirational people.  Motivation is contagious.  I do activities that bring the most joy.  If in some way it doesn’t feel good at the end, then it might not have been worth doing.

I tap into the mantra of my yoga studio…what is the BEST that can happen???  Don’t go looking at the worst thing that can happen.  Bad stuff can always pop up along the way.  But, if I choose to venture down a road (or lace up my running shoes, or put my butt on my yoga mat or tackle a new project)…what is the BEST possible outcome?  A focus on the positive leaves me challenged and inspired instead of putting me in a negative frame of mind.

If I’m not feeling motivated in the moment, I think of reasons why I shouldn’t do something. Are they truly valid reasons? Or are they simple EXCUSES or JUSTIFICATIONS for letting myself off the hook?

Valid reasons, I can live with.

Excuses, I cannot.

And through the course of it all, I allow time for breaks and silence and laziness and gratitude and reflection. Those moments and days are not “excuses” or a “lack of motivation.” They are instead rewards for kicking my own ass the rest of the time. Those little breaks are a way to honor my joy and reflection on the hard work that goes into everything I choose to do, and they are a way to recharge my motivation for the next task. Nothing fancy, but I have found that truly living a life I love (even in the hardest of moments) is motivation enough to see me through pretty much anything.

I would love to hear what thoughts or mantras keep YOU motivated as you trip along life’s journey. A positive and a forgiving heart seem to really go a long way when I am dealing with myself. I tend to want to go, go, go but sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m only able to do so much in the time that I’m given each day and that it’s okay because I’m still doing incredible things.

Getting pumped for the AC Marathon’s April Fools Half!

If you’re anything like me you start your race planning way, way in advance. It stands to reason that when you L-O-V-E a race, you register ASAP for the next year.

As it goes with the AC Marathon’s April Fools Half. Registration for their races opens as soon as the current race is over. 2016 will be my 5th consecutive year running the race and I’ve been running since the inaugural year in 2012. Can’t stop, won’t stop!

One of the things that I love most about this race is that I’m never alone! It’s a small race of usually around 2,000 runners and I’m always surrounded by friends and making them along the way.

This year brought the Rockford Peaches to the AC boardwalk! We not only rocked the 13.1 miles but the costume contest as well. It was Jenn’s first half and we had an awesome time crossing the finish line together.

Secret Chick 2015

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! One of my favorite posts is our annual Scootadoot Chick Secret Santa post. We just love each other, a lot, and we love you guys a lot, and we loving sharing with you how much we love each other, and you.

I promise, I have not been dipping into the spiked eggnog. Yet. I’m just pretty grateful for the wonderful people in my life, these ladies and all of you included.

So, without further ado…

After waiting with bated breath to see whose name I would draw for our little exchange, I was super excited to get Jess! (I would have been excited to get any one of these ladies, let’s be honest, I love them all!) Though Jess and I have never met (womp), it seems pretty clear that we’d get along smashingly. I mean, she loves Beyonce. That’s kind of the basis for all solid relationships, amirite? Anyways. When I drew Jess’ name, I hemmed and hawed for a while deciding what to give her – she’s a stylish chick, so I knew I wanted to find something to complement that. She’s also active – if she’s not running, she’s taking care of her totes adorbs little one. Whatever I got needed to fit that kind of lifestyle. I ended up finding a pretty and functional headband. It’s great for the working out (sweat-wicking!) and fun for the fashion-forward (multi-style!). One could wear it while running. Or while enjoying a lazy weekend. Or, my favorite, while going hard in the “athleisure” paint. Functional fashion at its finest!

It’s our third year of Scoot a Doot Secret Santa and I have yet to get the same person twice! Is that a record? I’m not sure! But I do have to say that I was pretty stoked to be paired with the lovely, talented, and gosh-darn awesome CAMILLE!

Cam is my ride-or-die chick and I always know that when we are together we are basically going to have fun, no matter when we stumble across. This year she came to visit in the spring and we (Jenn, Cam, and myself) took to the streets of Philly for a walking tour. I had SO. MUCH. FUN. with them. I still giggle when I think about how excited Cam was when she spotted someone walking around with Yuengling (because it’s hard to find in CA! Who knew?).

When I found the trivet that covered a few of the places we visited, I knew it would be a great gift for Cam and make her smile. There are so many places on there that we haven’t visited yet, so she’s just going to have to come back!

Vic

I was matched with Kyle this year. I love everything about this chickadee and wanted to get her something that proved useful (but pretty) for a multisport athlete – – runner, footgolfer, basketball diva. So I got her an Oiselle tank. I knew she loved their clothes since she borrowed some of mine on a few occasions and has some great pieces of her own. Happy holidays!

At a recent trip to the SkirtSports headquarters, I spotted this shirt and thought of Meri. I can hear her voice saying it as if she coined the phrase herself. And hey, we can all relate, right? I think we can all agree there should always be adult beverages at the finish line. Never mind if it’s 8:30 in the morning.

I gifted Bec with tea that has literary quotes on each bag. It blends two of her favorite things – tea and words (the second of which we bonded over to begin with). I hope it keeps you cozy and well-read, my dear!

My secret Santa this year was the lovely Vic. I knew immediately I wanted to get her something kitty related. I also know that Vic shares my love of baking. So I went out searching for cat baking supplies. Yes, that phrase is now in my Google history. I found lots of fun stuff and it was really hard to decide, but I knew the apron was the winner as soon as I saw it.  I can’t wait to see what treats Vic cooks up in this apron! Merry Christmas, my love!

Just like Mer, I’ve yet to get the same chick twice, and I was thrilled when my match this year was Jenn. I love this girl like crazy, and just want her to come back to my kitchen and hang out. Jenn’s loves include classic cinema (we’ve co-swooned over Montgomery Clift), Star Wars AND Trek, yoga and her pugs. I figured if I could incorporate at least two, I’d be happy. So when I spotted this pug yoga shirt, I knew this would be the perfect gift for Jenn. Wear it in good health, love, and try not to let the pups knock you over!

Show ‘Em Your Rack, A Tutorial

A while back, I posted about my plan to make a medal rack and share it with you, and this weekend, the planets finally aligned to allow me the time to get my craft on. Of course, there are a few things that always make DIY projects better.

So, now that we’re all in agreement on that, let’s proceed, shall we? Here’s what you’ll need for this project:

Step 1: Using a fine grit sandpaper or sanding block, lightly sand any rough areas on your wood piece. Pay attention to edges and corner in particular.

Step 2: Using a piece of paper, make a template for your chalkboard area to help you decide where you want it on your plaque. Once you have decided on placement, mark the corners with a pencil.

Step 3: Using a ruler and pencil, outline the desired area. Make sure your lines are straight and centered. Tape off the inside of your area with painters tape. Later you will paint the inside of your rectangle with chalkboard paint.

Step 4: Paint your plaque with primer. Be careful not to get any in the taped off area. Let dry.

Step 5: Paint over the primer with your tinted paint. Let dry.

Step 6: Paint a second coat of your colored paint. Once it’s dry, remove the painter’s tape.

Step 7: Tape off the painted area around your chalkboard area. Paint the bare wood with two coats of primer. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly, and sand lightly between coats. This will help ensure a smoother writing surface once the chalkboard paint is applied.

Step 8: Apply two coats or chalkboard paint, allowing each coat to dry completely between coats.

Step 9: After the chalkboard paint is dry, remove the tape. Touch up any areas with a small tipped paint brush if needed.

Step 10: Affix the tin strip (or pieces, as the case may be). Decide where you want your bibs to hang, and using a pencil, outline the strip. Nail in place. I had some tin tiles laying around my house, and used tin snips to cut them to the desired shape and size.

Step 11: Affix the picture frame hanger on the back. First, find the center of your plaque and mark it with a pencil. Then, find the center of the hanger and mark it with a marker. Next, align the two marks and nail your hanger to your plaque.

Step 12: Affix your medal hooks. Decide where you want them to go, and mark the screw holes with a pencil. It’s easier to start the holes using a drill and a bit. Using the hardware that came with your hooks, attach them to your plaque.

Step 13: Celebrate because YOU ARE DONE. And you rock! All that is left to do is hang your new medal rack. Then, attach your bibs to the clips and hang your bling from the hooks. Look how awesome you are!

I am loving how this project turned out. Now, I just need more medals to hang from it!

So long, 2015, You Were Pretty Awesome!

With the year drawing to a close and Thanksgiving later this week, I found myself reflecting on 2015. Since joining Scootadoot last November, I’ve gotten to do a lot of great things and meet some really wonderful people. I’d like to take a sec to just say I’ve had a great time being a Chick, and thought I’d share some of my favorite memories from my first year with Scoot.

Philly Stray Boots Tour – This self-guided walking tour was the kick-off to a great first half marathon weekend! Meri, Cam, and I saw the sites of historical downtown Philadelphia while looking for clues scavenger hunt style. The fact that it was self-guided meant that we weren’t part of a group crowded around a guide in period costume tell us stuff we earned in elementary school. Plus, we’re occasionally inappropriate, which likely would not have been appreciated by fellow tour goers with small children.

And the actual sites were pretty cool, like the first ever US Post Office! It’s still a working post office! (It had a creepy vibe, too, it you’re into that kind of thing.)

A few days later, I ran my first half with my fellow Chicks Mer, Cam, and Vic at the AC April Fool’s Half. There were so many things to love about this race! I hadn’t seen my girls for three years and a visit was long overdue! Plus, we had costumes, and they were cute, so there was that. I ran my half in 2:55 and was pretty darn pleased with myself!

The best part was the end! Seriously, when I saw that finish line I was SO HAPPY. I grabbed Meri’s hand as we crossed because there wasn’t anyone else I would have rather finished my first half with.

The other best part was the winning of the costume contest because we won stuff! After all the hard work Cam and I put into making our costumes and Vic and Meri put into looking cute in them, we celebrated with our favorite food group.

Then there was that time the Meridith came to visit me and we ran the BolderBOULDER! Before the race, we got to see Abdi and Meb and Pete at a press conference. It was certainly a highlight of the weekend.

As the end of the summer came I focused on my second 1/2, the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon. This was by far my biggest race of the year as far as fitness and athleticism were concerned. It was also the prettiest course I ran in 2015. I have nothing but positive things to say about this race, and it will probably be an annual entry for me from now on.

This was the hardest race I’ve run to date. The elevation in Estes Park is 7,522 and the course gains just under 500 feet over its thirteen miles. That’s why I’m so proud of this gorgeous medal, it represents all the things I was told I couldn’t do as a person with asthma.

Throughout the year, I pulled out my 2015 achievement board to check my progress. My goals were many and ambitious. Most of them did not happen. Some, however did, and the ones that I succeeded at were some of the most important I’ve ever set for myself. I can’t wait to make my achievement board for 2016.

Show Me Your (Medal) Rack!

The medal is one of the best things about racing, right? We work so hard for them, and they represent our big accomplishment. I don’t know about you, but if I had 5 minutes to evacuate my house, my medals are coming with me. It’s only right that they are given an honored place in our homes and are handsomely displayed. Just like our dreams should be.

But my two half marathon medals deserve a nice rack on which to be proudly displayed. Currently, my two medals are in my office at work, hanging from a coat hanger.

Since I like to make stuff I’ve decided to make a rack myself. I went to Michaels today and got a nice 12×16 wood  blank plaque that I can do whatever I like to!

The thing is, what to do? I found some inspiration (thank you, Pinterest), and imagine I will incorporate some of these elements into my rack.  I love this one because you can use any old shelf or hard surface since you’ll cover it with the bibs using Mod Podge. We love upcycling!

FootGolf… Say What?

Raise your hand if you’ve played soccer.

Okay, now raise your hand if you’ve played golf.

I’m guessing that the number of hands that went up for soccer was significantly higher than the number that went up for golf. Just a hunch, but I bet I’m right in assuming most of you have either never played golf, or have played a limited amount. I’m definitely one of those people – aside from minigolf or TopGolf, I’ve never really swung a club or played a round. Working in the golf industry has taught me that I am not alone.

In fact, the golf industry is struggling now to bring younger (millennial) golfers to the game. And women. Lest we forget that for so long golf was a “gentlemen only,” very exclusive sport. It still carries some of that stigma, which has definitely been seen as a hurdle to attracting new golfers to the links in recent years. Not to mention the fact that learning golf takes time, can be expensive, and can be really intimidating if you don’t have someone showing you the ropes.

To combat this, golf-hybrids have entered the market. New games that mimic golf, or incorporate elements of golf are popping up across the country. Aimed at attracting new players to the course, sports like Snag Golf and FootGolf have gained popularity in recent years.

I hear about FootGolf alllll the time at work. My friend Sarah is on a millennial golf task-force, and I’ve also been involved in conversations surrounding millennials in golf, so when a Groupon for FootGolf popped up in Sarah’s email, we immediately decided that a double FootGolf date was in order.

So, what is FootGolf exactly? According to the American FootGolf League, it is:

“… a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. The game is played with a regulation #5 soccer ball at a golf course facility on shortened holes with 21-inch diameter cups. The rules largely correspond to the rules of golf. FootGolf as a game is played throughout the world in many different forms, but as a sport, it is regulated by the Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG). The American FootGolf League (AFGL) is the exclusive member of the FIFG and governing body for the sport of FootGolf in the United States. The AFGL is organizing tournaments throughout the country working with golf courses to bring FootGolf to their clubs as another avenue for revenue and to develop the game further.”

Basically, you take soccer balls out on the golf course, and bomb them down the fairway toward an oversized hole. The goal is to get the ball into the hole in as few kicks as possible. Easy peasy.

So, last weekend, Sarah, myself and our significant others loaded up and headed out to our tee time.

We were all a little interested to see how well this adventure would go – while three of the four of us had played golf before, none of us were soccer players. As it turns out, neither mattered and after warming up (the first hole was a little bit of a doozy… staying out of the rough was tricky), each hole got progressively better.

At Cameron Hills Golf Links, the FootGolf holes are on the same course as the golf holes. The tee boxes are often in different places and the holes themselves are fairly well separated. That said, we were pretty much on top of the golf course and there were traditional golfers playing while we were out there, which got a little hairy sometimes. We actually hung back and let a couple of folks play through so that we could take our time and stay out of their way.

This is obviously a point of contention among traditional golfers – sharing the course with non-traditional players. But hopefully, sports like FootGolf can combat that mindset, which will ultimately help open doors for others to the game of golf.

We rented carts, but it was pretty apparent that walking the course would probably have been more efficient, and would likely have improved our pace of play. I think we wasted more time moving the carts than anything else.

All in all, we had a great time. We played 9 holes (we could have played 18, but due to previous engagements, we abbreviated our game), had a few beers, and enjoyed a beautiful morning on the links. We found out, too, that East Potomac Golf Course (a public course in DC) is now offering FootGolf as well, so we’ll definitely be checking that course out in the near future!

I think I’ve been needing to escape city life this summer. Evidenced by the fact that so many of my posts have been about traveling or hiking or getting outdoors. Go figure that the Alaska girl wants to play outside all the time. Huh. Who could have guessed?

So, escape I did. The boyfriend and I decided that since we both had some time off, we needed to go on an adventure. When I plan adventures, I don’t cut corners. And since I’ve lived on the East Coast, I’ve discovered a ton places I’ve wanted to visit. Most of which involve sleeping in a tent on the ground and clambering through the woods and up mountains. I might be a little crunchy. Whatever.

11954658_10153189965381909_8358987849319891410_nOn the docket? A little jaunt down to Shenandoah National Park, a quick 2.5 hour drive from DC. We stayed at Loft Mountain Campground, and the nice thing about going this late in the season – before Labor Day weekend – was that there were plenty of campsites available for the nights that we wanted to stay.

Saturday morning, I got my long run out of the way (because #marathontraining, yo), I picked up some donuts (because #marathontraining, yo), we packed the car and were on our way. We pulled into camp that afternoon, set up the tent and did a little exploring around the campground. We actually had our first wildlife sighting within ten minutes of unpacking – a young deer decided he was just gonna chill on the trail in front of us. There’s a pretty good chance that he was a little high. Or something. Just tooottttaaallllyyyy chilled out.

After stretching our legs, we settled into the campsite for the night, built our fire, cracked a couple of beers and I started making dinner. The trick to campfire cooking? Prepare ahead of time. Trust me. I had done some meal prep earlier in the week that made dinner SO easy and so delicious. Best life choice? Foil packets. I chopped up some onions and potatoes, tossed them in olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic, etc, wrapped them in foil and tossed them on the fire. In the other foil packets, I took salmon filets, seasoned them with a little salt and pepper, and topped with lemon slices. Those joined the veggies on the fire for about 10-15 minutes.

Result? Dinner that is the Bomb.com and super easy to clean up – also important when camping. Our second night, we went a little more traditional campfire with a twist and did brats over the fire. No regrets were had. None. All of it was yummy – especially after the long day of hiking that was Sunday.

The campground we stayed at? Right along the Appalachian Trail, which I’ve started hiking pieces of already. I was really looking forward to crossing a few more miles off – and we did. And it was GORGEOUS on top of those mountains. Reminded me so much of home. *heart-eye emoji alllll over the place*

The boy, ever the musician, brought his drum pad up the trail and fulfilled a bucket list item by playing on a mountain top. The kid was like Drum Jesus. It was great.

By the end of the day, though, we were both beat. Back to camp to make dinner, drink beer, and have the best camping treat ever. S’mores, duh.

I’m already looking forward to the next time we’re able to escape to the woods.

City Fit Girls – Fit Retreat PHL Jawn!

Oh my goodness.

GOODNESS. I think that’s really the best way to describe the Philadelphia Fit Retreat hosted by City Fit Girls.

It’s no secret that I’ve been sort of meh when it comes to my workouts lately. Dealing with an injury has kept me from running and while I have been going to the gym twice a week, I’ve been in a rut. But the goodness that was Saturday’s Fit Retreat really shook the cobwebs from my workout soul.

Before we go any further, I learned a word this weekend and that word is JAWN. Apparently it’s has been around awhile – at least in Philly. So please, just smile and nod. I don’t get out much. If you are like me and don’t venture out often, jawn is an all encompassing word that can be used for anything. If you take anything away from this blog post, let it be that.

(But I hope you take away more!)

Now that that’s out of the way, let me tell you why this Fit Retreat PHL jawn was the best ever.

First and foremost: THE PEOPLE. 

From the co-creators of City Fit Girls (Kiera Smalls and Takia McClendon), to the top-notch instructors (Diva Richards, Mark Donohue, Rachel Rubin, Veronica Dilzer, and Brittany and Gillian from Grace and Glory Yoga), to the 150 attendees… this was a quality group. I felt comfortable, welcomed, and appreciated from start to finish.

My dear friends: Sue, Maureen, and Jen. It's always nice attending an event with friends. By the end of the first session, I felt like I was surrounded by new friends!

We were greeted as soon as we arrived and because of the small amount of attendees, we were always able to find a familiar face.

During the introductory speech we were encouraged to test our limits and also cheer for each other. And I promise you, it was not just lip service. The good vibes were flowing through the Philly Impact Hub; the space was fantastic and, even more importantly, the people were fantastic. The cap of 150 people was perfect for the space and for each session (two-three were going on at any given time).

While chatting with Kiera toward the end of the day she said that City Fit Girls are excited to work with a variety of brands to introduce the women in our network to new and exciting products.

Therefore, they don’t just stick with one way of doing things; they’re presenting new and different workouts constantly. I appreciated the concept and from chatting with other people there, it gave them warm fuzzies too. No ruts to be had! Plus New Balance sponsored this year’s FitRetreat and that, in itself, was pretty amazing.

Awesome is the watchword. (You know, besides jawn.)

The VIP ticket for the event was less than $40! The way I figure it, that is about 10 cents a minute of AWESOMENESS. Worth each and every cent and then some.

After posting about it on my Facebook page and recruiting a couple of awesome friends, Jen and Sue, we were quickly planning our trip to and from the city’s Impact Hub -a really awesome co-working space in Fishtown. Thanks to City Fit Girl’s agreement with Lyft, we were able to get in and out of the city for mere peanuts and not have to worry about parking (and honestly, I do worry about parking – cost of parking, parallel parking, not hitting other cars while parallel parking – I could go on).

It also included an awesome lunch from Sweetgreen. (And awesome MIMOSAS – YES, PLEASE.)

And an awesome massage (which I skipped but Jen didn’t, so I know it was awesome – she said that it actually released her emotions!).

Did I mention the very awesome workout sessions? I was able to participate in three workouts and a few informational sessions including healthy eating tips with Whole Foods and skin and facial care.

You know how you sometimes you don’t realize what’s missing in your life until you experience it? That was the case with ALL the sessions at the Fit Retreat. How often can you say that?

Work it out!

The main reason for the day (at least for me) was to hit up some amazing workouts and try things outside of my comfort zone bubble. It’s been awhile since I’ve been to a group fitness class like the ones that were being offered at the Fit Retreat.

Unfortunately a time turner hasn’t made its way to Philly yet so I had to choose a few sessions that really spoke to me. I went with Killer Kardio with Diva Richards, Mid-Morn Workout Jawn (there’s that word!) with Mark Donohue, and Vinyasa Yoga with Brittany and Gillian.

The sessions were no joke. I thought that they might get progressively easier through the day but nope. They did not. The intensity was strong from start to finish but the words were encouraging and we were reminded to do our best and to think of where we are in our own journey.

There was everything from kickboxing moves to burpees to oh, approximately one billion squats. Mark Donohue played Flower and with every “down” we had to do a squat and hold it until the word “up” was said. I might have been cursing.

We did planks, planks, and more planks, and in between the planks, since we were down there, we did pushups.

The biggest surprise for me was how difficult the yoga session was for me. Because, hello, YOGA. I can handle yoga, right? But my foot was already tired from the rest of the sessions and didn’t want to ground itself.

It made for a wobbly experience and there were a few times I had to chill in Child’s Pose rather than take part in all the poses. It made me angry. Yoga isn’t supposed to make you angry, I know. But it did. I think it’s mainly that I’m so used to reminding myself “I can and I will” and I couldn’t, right then and there.

However, thanks to the gentle reminders from Gillian and Brittany, I was able to focus on what I was able to do within those moments and let the rest go.

I’m sure I’m forgetting something or many things. Oh, like the vegan Watermelon What What drink from Gangster Vegan Organics that was pretty gosh darn awesome.

The entire day was so good for me and my soul. Every event should flowed as well as this one did. The sessions reminded me of my strengths and also gently nudged me to forgive my weaknesses. And it was good. So very good.
