Chick Chat: Snack Attack!

What’s the best meal of the day? Snack. Boom. Done.

The Scoot a Doot chicks LOVE us some snacks. We try to keep the snackage on the healthy side, and we’re more than willing to share. Okay, maybe not more than willing, but at least willing. At the very least, we share snack ideas with each other… and now we’re going to share them with you!  And rest assured, this is nothing but our unbridled opinions. The links below are just for your information. No one sent us free snacks. But, you know, we certainly wouldn’t object to getting free snacks! Would you? (Hint, hint).

Mer

Oh, yay! We are back to my favorite subject: FOOD!

I feel like all the time is snack time at our house. Snacks for everyone! My kids are grazers, they like to eat smaller meals throughout the day rather than full meals. Breakfast can last all morning long and as far as I’m concerned, that’s not a bad thing!

Some favorite afternoon snacks are mixed nuts, trail mix, that sort of thing. Whole wheat sandwich thins with either Justin’s or MaraNatha peanut or almond butters, sliced bananas and cinnamon. Fage or Chobani Greek yogurts are delicious and easy.

Now I’m hungry.

Me too, Mer. Me too.

Jess

I’m not always the healthiest of snackers, so I need easy grab-and-go snacks in order to make the right choices. You can always find some sea salted almonds or cashews in my snack drawer at work, nestled next to a bag of sweet potato Pop Chips. Whole wheat bagels with chunky organic peanut butter and a banana is yummy and filling.

But my absolute favorite healthy snack is Greek yogurt with Nature’s Path pumpkin flax granola. People, this stuff is amazing. I mean really, really delicious. When in doubt, I always fall back on it for breakfast or a snack!

Jess

Greek Yogurt and delicious looking granola a la Jess!

Cam

My favorite snack currently is juiced veggies and fruits but since you can’t put that in a basket and ship across the country, a very close second is belVita Breakfast Biscuits.

They’re like graham crackers but come in a couple different varieties, like blueberry and apple cinnamon.  They’re not very low in calories but they’re high in fiber, grains, and vitamins.  They’re a cookie substitute that satisfies my sweet cravings when I don’t have time to juice or make a smoothie.  The package comes with 4 biscuits but it usually only takes 2 to fill me up.  And my kids love them too!
Belvita. Not Velveeta.

Vic
I’m a snacker. And I usually crave fritos.

Yes, I know they are bad for me. Yes, I know they have no redeeming qualities. But I love them nonetheless.

Occasionally, I throw caution to the wind and eat them anyway, but I typically snack on fresh fruit (apples, bananas and grapes are my faves) or yogurt (Noosa, Chobani bites or Oikos Greek yogurt.)  I also love pretzel thins, raisins, pita chips with hummus, sunflower seeds and nuts – any type of nut, I don’t discriminate.

Vic is never too busy for Noosa!

And to try to stave the cravings, I also drink LOTS of water. I’m hoping it will fill me up so I’m not hungry – read, snacking – but that rarely works as well as I’d hoped.

Brooke

I love snacks! Who doesn’t? I have a lot of awesome crackers and cookies in my house, because I have kids and we don’t completely
deprive them of treats (aka junk food), but I always make sure they have a healthy snack first. And I try to avoid most of the treats by
keeping the pantry and fridge stocked with my favorite healthy stuff.

Flavored almonds and I are totally having a moment right now. I love the wasabi spiced almonds and the vanilla roasted are great if I want something sweet.

Brooke likes sugar AND spice!

Kashi trail mix bars are my “on the go” snack; I always have one in my tote. And some days, my favorite snack is a latte from Starbucks. That totally counts, right?

Of course, I eat lots of fruits and veggies too.

Bec

If I were a dinosaur, I’d be a Snackosauras. Seriously. If I could realistically make my entire diet of snacks, I’d be a happy girl. Don’t get me wrong, I love mealtime, but I LOVE snacktime. And it happens so often, which is even better!

In my unhealthier days, snacks were a box of Cheez-its. Or a pint of Ben and Jerry’s. Yeah, the whole thing. In both cases. These days, I’m working on making snack time part of my healthy diet and making sure my snacks are nutritious, tasty and satisfying.

Like a lot of the chicks, I’m a big fan of Justin’s Almond Butter (the vanilla flavored packet is a go to high calorie snack when I need protein) and Greek yogurt (Noosa and Chobani top my list, but Oikos does in a pinch). Lara Bars, Kind Bars, nuts or seed based snacks (Somersaults… delicious), fruit and veggies, or cheese and whole grain crackers are all in heavy rotation.

But when I’m craving something salty by the handful, it’s all about Boom Chicka Pop. This four ingredient wonder is addictive, so be careful. But at 35 calories a cup, you don’t have to be too careful. Three cups of that in a baggie is the best 100 calorie pack known to man. It’s salty and fresh and just so good.

Chicka chicka yeah yeah! (Name that film).

So, who’s hungry? Me? Yes. You? Probably. And we don’t want to leave our readers hungry! So…..

We’ve decided to share our snacks with you, for real. There’s a link below for a little giveaway. We’ll select two winners and you will receive a box of yummy snacks from either Chick Bec or Chick Brooke. We probably won’t mail you any Greek yogurt, because ewww, but we’ll make up boxes of our faves and send them out to you. Good? Good!

  1. You know I’m all about winning things and snacks are always a winner. I would love a box of snacks, I might even share them with Phil, but only the ones I don’t like. 😉

  2. My favorite snacks are hummus or cheese with flat breads or crackers. And, I always keep bags of snacks in my car for my salt craving while commuting. White chedder cheese rice cakes, or popcorn, chips with a hint of lime and the list goes on and on……healthy, no. But so yummy.

  3. I snack on skinny vanilla lattes…does that count? If not I like greek yogurt and almonds or apples and cheese or Loaded Nachos…do those count? Loaded Nachos are not my regular snack tho… that would be the Happy Hour Snack on Poet Meeting nights 😉 (teachers announce Poet Meetings over the school AP system :meaning PUB NIGHT!)

  4. If vegetables like peas don’t do the trick (yes I’ll eat 2/3 cup for a snack), then I go with a bit of cheese.

    • oh my gosh I LOVE cheezits. They were my tops snack for forever. now I tell myself they will be stale — even when I open a fresh box. It helps keep me away from them

  5. My current go to mid-day snack is: classic hummus with pita bread, red grapes, Mini Baybel white cheddar cheese…YUM!
I also love KIND bars, almonds, PB &J (loooove it), no Fritos but I have been known to tear into a Cheeto bag or two… :p

  6. I’m a huge snacker. In addition to my three meals a day, I generally have 4-6 snacks a day.

Fresh fruit is my favorite snack, and I also love Greek yogurt. But I’ve frequently struggled to find snacks I like that don’t need to be refrigerated and stay good for a while. I can’t say how many times I’ve bought a box of some kind of bar to try, eaten a couple and then kept the box in a cupboard for a year or two before admitting I don’t like it.

Fortunately, I’ve recently discovered KIND bars (love the Dark Chocolate Cinnamon Pecan and the Dark Chocolate Nuts and Sea Salt) and Pure organic bars (love the Apple Cinnamon).

And when I was at Wegmans yesterday, I picked up three healthy snack items to try out: Somersaults (made with sunflower seeds and toasted grains), I heart keenwah (quinoa clusters) and Dole chia and fruit clusters. So far I’ve tried the Somersaults (I got cinnamon, which seems to be a running theme in my snacks now that I’m writing this out), and they’re great.

As you can see, I take my snacking very seriously.

    • THANKS Ben! You sure take your snacking seriously! And I see a cinnamon theme going… Those are lots of great suggestions 🙂 Please let us know what you think of the new items you are testing out. I tried those Dole Chia seeds. I liked them, but didn’t finish bag before its contents went stale. oops. Am VERY curious about the i heart keenwah goodies you speak of!

      • I’ve tried the I heart keenwah a couple times now, and I find them just OK. Probably won’t get them again. The Somersaults have become one of my go-to snacks. Haven’t gotten around to trying the Dole chia snack yet.

  7. I’ve been known to live off of snacks. I regret it later, but it was delicious.

Boom Chicka Pop is AMAZING! It’s like popcorn with a hint of crack.

I’m also addicted to Clif Kids Z Bars. The Iced Oatmeal Cookie tastes like a cookie, but is packed with whole fiber and 3 grams of protein. Love those.

    • I’ll have ti track down this Boom Chicka Pop crack. It sounds heavenly! And YES – Clif Kids bars are great! I love the Clif crunch bars too. (I can’t believe I didn’t mention those in my post!)

        • I totally just bought some on my afternoon trip to wegmans. (Cause its my second home) ill let you know what I think. But Bec hasn’t led me astray yet!

  8. I love snacking on organic Medjool dates from the farmer’s market and fresh figs in the summertime!

  9. I’ll always grab fresh fruit if it’s available, but I’m a sucker for my homemade pseudo trail mix: peanuts, raisins, and chocolate chips. Excellent for refueling after a workout 😀 And Delicious!

    • Definitely delicious! I’ve been on a fresh fruit kick lately – this is the best season for it! We have a farm not too far from my house and I visit weekly. 🙂

  10. Since I’m GF and recently DF, snacks have been a challenge. But I love nuts & fruit together. Boom Chicka Popcorn is FAB – I have to make snack bags or I’d eat the entire thing in one sitting. 🙂

    • I can image that snacks would be a challenge when GF and DF but it’s good that you’re able to find some good ones that work for you! I love the idea of taking a big bag and breaking it down into smaller bags – I do that with other things. So much cheaper to buy a big bag and break it down than the snack bags.

  11. I am a popcorn-aholic!!

(Side note: I liked your facebook page from my running page, Once Upon a Run, not from my personal page which you have to use to log into rafflecopter)

    • See, the bad things about reading all these posts is that now I want to eat popcorn at 9:30 in the morning. 😉

And awesome – thanks for the clarification with that. I wish FB let us comment as our running pages on other running pages.

    • Dessert counts, for sure! I haven’t tried Boom Chicka Pop yet either but Vic said she’ll bring some on Sunday. 🙂 I know you can get it at Wegman’s and I hear it’s at Target too!

    • RIGHT? This post and all the comments make me want to run to the kitchen and snack. 😉 (Except I just ate lunch so I’ll refrain.)

    • I’m a big fan of raisins too although I’ll admit that I love them most in trail mix. Yummmm. Oh, FROYO. There’s a place opening near my house – about a mile away. I mean, that basically evens itself out if I run there and run home, right?

  12. My son (age 8) recently found some wild rice crackers at BJs that were awesome and healthy. I definitely need to go back and get another bag!

    • Ooooh, really! I’ll need to check that out. My son is 8 too and he’s all about the snacky foods.
